Images that move with the scroll of the page...

Can anyone tell me what technology is used for this?
Imagine a 2 column table where the left column has article after article and can scroll for days - the right column has only enough content to fill the main page and is top aligned - can anyone tell me how some sites are able to have the items on one side stay visible and move along as the viewer scrolls down in order to get maximum visibility of that content?
Hope that makes sense!
Any insight would be great - not sure at all where to begin to look!
