Problem with "floating" tableless design (IE5)
Hi Everyone,
I have recently developed new tableless design for one site (URL). Once it was finished I started to test it in several browsers (IE 6, Mozilla (Firefox and another gecko engined browsers), Opera 7 and finally IE 5.0). While almost all the browsers display site in a manner I designed it to present IE 5.0 behaves somewhat awkward. Site includes right-column menu made with the use of <ul> list. Once You move mouse over the menu site is immediately moved about 600-800 px down making its use rather hard task. I have excluded other causes of this problem and limited the area of interest to this right columned menu. If anyone encountered similiar problem or even solved it I would be pleased to hear about the solution or any trials of solving this problem. Hope to hear any reply soon ... Piotr Jaś |

Whoa - that's certainly some weird effect IE5.01 has...
Hmm - looks like some of the fonts in the RH column aren't being styled correctly - they look bigger than they should be... have you validated your CSS, and also checked it manually to see if in fact, the RH col fonts should be styled correctly? Though, I don't know if the font issue is necessarily the cause of the "jumping down". Without looking @ the CSS & source, I'm thinking it might be a box model issue - because you are using floats, your inner containers are probably too big for the outter container, and are trying to jump down to find a clear spot to rest, but aren't finding one. Are you aware of the various issues that IE5/5.5 PC has with the "box model"? If not, google "IE box model hack", or change your design for allow for the box model issues (using an outter container is a method I use... I try to avoid hacks like the plague) PS - Love the design and layout! |

I have double-checked my CSS files. Tried to use box model hacks earlier but this haven't solved the problem. Jumping effect is still a problem for me. Fonts in left column look the same in IE 5.01 as in IE 6. If not please send me screenshot.
Thanks for the response. I'm looking forward for any response to continue this discussion and solve the problem. |

RH = Right hand col.
The fonts are incorrectly styled in both IE5 and IE5.5 on PC. Screen shot attached. |

Thanks again for the response.
Cause of RH column problem isn't concerned with "jumping" effect. I haven't defined style for RH column table and that's why font's there look different on different browsers. I'm still looking for reason of "jumping effect". It would be great to know that this problem is not observed on MSIE 5.5 and onlyu on IE5.0. If You find the problem please let me know about any ideas how to solve it. |
