Unhappy ASP - SQL, text too long

Hello everybody,

Before I speak even further, I must notice you that I am Dutch So sorry for
my grammatics...

Introduction:
i am using a microsoft SQL server, for an ASP site. The pages of the site are
stored in Fields on my Database.

Problem:
I have got a field in my Database, wich stores the data of a page
(like history.asp), the problem is that the Data Type TEXT isn't long enough
for my data...

Question:
Am I using the wrong Type? is there a longer type?

Please answer in reasonable, plain english ...

Hey AB_Jeroen! So you're Dutch....I'm looking foward to going there in a couple of years (if the current problems sease to continue). Anyway...back to bussiness:

I have no idea, as to why you have the page code inside a field in the table, but i suppose you have your reasons.
It's quite unbelivable that the text data type is not long enough for you (2 to the 30th power characters!!). Try using ntext, but I'm not sure it's going to work. Just, how big are those ASP??

Good Luck...

Anibal.

PS: If you have the client tools instaled, check the help (F1) and search for "data types". You will find a list of all suported data types and the size (in bytes and chars) each one supports

Jep I'm Dutch, so I might help you out asswel

I am not filling the field with code, just with the plain information of
the site., like History, and Sales... Might it be a problem of
Enterprise Manager? This I am using for building all the tables etc.

Also I filled the 'sample' history with E. Manager, not yet with code..
So I don't have 2 worry that the Text Type is to small?
(its not a extremely large histroy...)

Hey AB_Jeroen!

Hold on for a minute...you think the field is too short because you can not see the whole text in the E.M. ? If that's the case, don't worry! The thing is that the E.M. does not show the entire field when it is too long. Relax, your info is there. Just give it a test: retrive it, parse it and you shall find it (if the field was not long enough, you couldn't perform an insert on the DB).

Good Luck, and maybe will see in a couple of years!

Anibal.

Haha, thank you..

I'll review the whole situation 2day, I do got some
experience with SQL I'm really thinking of some kind
of error in the designed table... I'm smart enough to
view the whole info by walking trough the cell

But I'll give it a try by code, I'll let u know..

I've got it! Never saw this coming though... when
I'm inserting manually by E. Manager, the text cant be
pasted within the cell... when I'm writing the insert
by code with a query, it can!

The text can get out with the ASP site, but when im
viewing the cell with E.Manager it says [long text] if its
above 200 chars (+/-).

that was the problem, not quite smart of E.Manager, even
when I want to eddit the text without code, it gets an
error

so dont touch the view option of E manager

It had to be that way! That bloody E. Manager....although, logicaly, if the text was too long in deed, how would you show that many characters?. What it should do is tell you the length of the string, so you can relax, knowing the text is actually there!!

I suppose that's too much to ask for, considering the source!!

Good Luck!!

Anibal.
