Question Chatter bot

I wish to develop a chatter bot as a pet project but need some advice in the way of programming language to use. I have experience in ASP, VB and lesser knowledge of Java. Is it possible to produce the bot in the first two? If so have you got any advice, code or helpful websites that will enable me to produce the bot. I want to produce the bot in terms of adaptability, self learning and persistence. Is there a chance of any help?

Interesting question. Your best bet would be to check out google. Writing a decent bot (AI) is a tricky excercise.

There is now a XML standard for doing AI work called AIML.

Here's a list of good bots (I remember alice being a great on) - http://www.line-a.com/opennote/mar00/bots.html
