New to .NET

Currently I am using W2K Server to host IIS.

I use ASP etc to create web pages. Now I would like to start playing with .NET.

What must I install on my server to start using .NET and will I be able to continue developing in both technologies.

Also - will Visual Studio .NET run alongside Visual Studio V6.

I have only one machine and must be able to use it to handle both technologies.

Regards JEG

You will need to have the .Net Framwork installed. Yes you can use ASP and ASP.Net side by side without any problem.

Yes but you do not necessarily need Visual Studio .Net. You may want to consider Web Matrix a very nice and free alternative offered to ASP.Net developers directly from M.S.

Web Matrix Download

Thanx for the info BukHix.

What will WebMatrix do ?

Regards JEG

PS. I should have mentioned that I use VS6 mostly for VB6 development. I want to be able to continue to do that whilst learning .Net skills (ASP.NET - VB.NET - C# etc)

Webmatrix is a lightweight ASP.Net IDE. It does many of the same things that VS does but is lacking many of the features (for now). Some will be added and others will be left out to keep the incentive to buy VS going.

One difference in the two IDEs is that VS uses Code Behind and Webmatrix does all its code inline. I have heard many VS developers say that they use VS for big projects but prefer Webmatrix for the smaller ones.

I actualy prefer it to VS for many reasons but I guess in the end it all comes down to personal preference.
