open word/excel/outlook from within asp page

I wish to open an instance of word/excel or outlook from within and asp/html page in an intranet where the resulting documents will be stored on the server. I guess the applications should be opened locally (at the client's). I use IE, Dreamweaver, IIS, XP. I have tried various suggestions from forums but I seem to ignore some settings or switches or references as I always get answers like "The ActiveX component could not open the "Excel.Application" etc etc. Can anyone help and also teach me how set up my tools correctly? I would be very grateful for some help.
