URL/Mailto Replacement

I have read with great intrest the answers to Ste Collins with his problems of adding in a link to a URL or Mailto.

My question is, in a message board system or forum, how do you get the URL's to link when writing in loads of text, without having a seperate http:// button to press where you want the link to go?
