Need basic info about functions

Can anyone fill me in with the basic info on how to use functions in orde to return an object,'
inFile, outStream, etc? Or, could you give me a site with that basic info?

just declare the stream globally (that is, not inside any function, at the beginning of your program right after the includes)

i have tried returning streams, but it doesn't work (at least the way i tried)
