General - Return value

I am very new to C/C++, my instructor wants me to take the code below and translate it into C/C++, what i have at the very bottom. He says im on the right track, but i need a return function. Ive tried and cant seem to figure it out.

This is the code that has to be translated

public object andd(operand1, operand2)
{
object functionReturnValue = null;
dynamic result = null;
result = invalid;
if (operand1 == preferred) {
if (operand2 == preferred) {
result = preferred;
}
}
if (operand1 == preferred) {
if (operand2 == other) {
result = other;
}
}
if (operand1 == other) {
if (operand2 == preferred) {
result = other;
}
}
if (operand1 == other) {
if (operand2 == other) {
result = other;
}
}
functionReturnValue = result;
if (Trace)
traceAdd("andd");
return functionReturnValue;
}

Code:
Original - Code
    This is what i translated it into

#define preferred l
#define other o
#define invalid x

char andd( char operand1, char operand2)
{
char result=invalid;
if (operand1 == preferred) {
if (operand2 == preferred) {
result = preferred;
}
}
if (operand1 == preferred) {
if (operand2 == other) {
result = other;
}
}
if (operand1 == other) {
if (operand2 == preferred) {
result = other;
}
}
if (operand1 == other) {
if (operand2 == other) {
result = other;
}
}
