Database Rookie

Hello There:
I need to know the most basic information on building a database. The little I know includes realizing i need an interface and I've heard the term table mentioned. My website has an sql tool, and I think this is necessary also? My main question is what type of file holds the table to enter data, how does this interact with sql (if it does)? The interface aspect I understand, and have attempted implementing one, but I believe because I have nothing for it to reference I'm spinning my wheels.

Note: My webs sql tool told me I had successfully created a database, but I have no idea where to go from there. I guess what I'm saying is, what are the base ingredients necessary to form a functional database?

Thanks!

There are plenty of books and tutorials, etc on the DB's work - a simple explanation would take up many pages of this forum.
