Sursatraj,
I'm glad you enjoyed my article - it's a topic that I've been thinking about for some time. In fact, I was amazed when I read the Knowing-Doing Gap earlier this year, because it rang so true to me in my experience of software development. I'm sure there are some really hot development teams out there, that can deliver elegant, robust code in a timely fashion. But, let's be honest, most of us just muddle through. It seems to me that with recent trends towards patterns, model-driven architectures, iterative development, together with good processes and quality control, we are slowly learning how to write better software, but there are still some really deep issues to be tackled. Remember the joke about Bill Gates and General Motors ? We find it funny because we recognise a truth in it, and perhaps that just highlights the fact that software engineering really is in its infancy. Regards, Simon |
