Article Discussion: yEnc Format Files
News and Mail transfer require that a binary attachment is
"encoded" before it is sent. And they are "decoded" after they have been received. Normally all this is done by your newsreader (or mail-program). You don’t see it. Most don’t even know it. yEnc files are formatted in a coding system that is up to 40% smaller than UUencode and Base64 and also include error checking and multipart file support. This means that posts are smaller and take less time to download. Read the full article here: yEnc Format Files |

Author did a good job in the article. Thank You.
Just a question to author: So, far I know Microsft Outlook express didn't support yEnc directly. Does it support now? Thank You. |

I tried some yEnc files with the latest version of Outlook Express. I also searched the Microsoft web site, and got no hits.
I also posted a message on microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress to see if any of the developers as Microsoft will get back to me (I did beta testing for Office 2002, Office 2003 and Windows ME, so I have had plenty of contact with them). |

Outlook & yenc..the answer
At last I've found a proper working answer to the problem of decoding yenc files in Outlook. It invisible so once it's set up you can ignore it, and it's free.
The program is called FidolookSl http://www.fidolook.org/ 1.Download the file FISL.a85.cab on that page and then install. 2.Now Download FLyEnc.dll http://www.fidolook.com/download/Fl_yEnc.zip, which contains additional an DLL for reading yenc files. 3.Extract this DLL to the Fidolook program folder. 4.Once installed run FidolookSL, It looks the same as Outlook but with an additional Menu Bar at the top 5.Go to Misc/Other/Enable yEnc support(read message) click the box. 6.Close it down, reboot and instead of running Outlook run Fidolook. It will have all your settings so there's no need to change anything. I've been using it for 3 months with no problems at all Have Fun |
