Mysterious disappearing text box

I have a main Flash movie with two clips in it from the library. in the top layer I have a dynamic text field that is set to a variable value that supplies the current date. in the layer below I have a clip that loads a jpg according to a query string value. All is fine as long as the text is normal untransformed text. However, when I rotate the text field it will no longer display the text. A trace statement accurately displays the text property of the text field but it will not render the text. Am I out of luck? Are dynamic text boxes unable to render when I rotate them? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Flash version 8 BTW

This has always been the result of rotating a dynamic textfield. It will show in trace but will not render onstage.
