onEnterFrame problems

I'm having trouble understanding basic onEnterFrame usage with Flash MX.

The actionscript helpfile gives this as an example:

myMovieClip.onEnterFrame = function () {
trace ("onEnterFrame called");
};

okay, i got it. I was making the mistake of referring to the movie clip in the library rather than the movie clip instance on the screen.
