API Services Library

Been tinkering with an Access Database and receiving some help from Developers on this forum and other similar forums.

Could someone please explain in the simple lay-person terms:

What API is and how you would use it?
In addition what is the advapi32.dll function?
Advantages and differences of using Active Directory as opposed to API for MS Windows?

I have Googled it but the explanations are not aimed at dummies like me!

Anything comments would be gratefully received.
