MSDOS: changing printer codes in software

i have an old msdos based program that we use and it works ( i know we need to upgrade.) but we are trying to upgrade the printer. we are running windows xp and we can print to the oki 591 printer fine but we want to upgrade the printer to an inkjet or a laser printer. i can print to the printer but it just prints some character on each page ..aprox 5-6 when im only printing 1. i found an area inside of the dos software for installing printers ut it looks like they are using some sort of printer codes. is there a way to p\find a newer printer and the printer codes or am i just stuck with the load and annoying oki printer? thanks for any help.

chris

What did you try, a laser or an inktjet?

If the software is expecting a dot matrix printer, and doesn't use any OS drivers (quite likely), a laser printer it most likely not going to work.
Unless the program is written specifically for the Oki however, most older LPT printers should at least be mildly compatible.

I'm not exactly clear about what happens though: Does it divide a page over multiple pages when you only print one, or does it print more than one character, when you only print one character?

There is one program out there that seems to have covered the whole MS-DOS printer codepage issue, maybe you can email them, ask them about it.
The software is call Tao EXDOS. They have a printing only version...

Good luck
