Newbie to Programming - Where do I begin?

I am trying to figure out which programming language will work for the task I am trying to accomplish. The extent of my programming experience, if you will call it that is Basic HTML.

I am trying to create a catalog type program that is based on pictures and information in those pictures.

1) Would allow you to sort those pictures in a list based on certain parameters.
2) Would allow you to select pictures and add them to a list in a pane on the right. Maybe multiple panes. Drag and Drop, double click, or arrow between panes type adding.
3) Would allow you to save/print your selections

I want to be able to make something with a nice GUI.

I don't even know where to begin. If someone can point in the right direction as to which language I should focus my attention on, what books I should consider, etc., I would be very appreciative.

I would personally try C#. It has a nice interface for making GUIs, and it has some code completion techniques that you can use to make your life easier. Still, C# can be a bit fickle sometimes and you have to know when to fix that sort of behavior.

However, are you trying to put this online? I'm not sure how much C# will help if that is the case.

You could also try Smalltalk. I've read that Squeak Smalltalk is good for beginners, and might be able to complete the tasks you want to tackle.

Thank you for the advice, I will look into both of those right away.

The program I am looking to create is for offline use. Just something I was looking to whip up for some friends. It is actually going to be the base for a paper and pencil game.

Oh, cool! That sounds like something I'd be interested in seeing.

In that case, definitely try C#. If that proves difficult, see if Smalltalk is more your speed.

When I am finished with it, I can send you a copy. Of course, being that I am just starting into programming it may take a little while
