Session time out automatically everytime page is accessed?

I am using PHP version 4.0.5 am implementing some rather basic but sufficient authentication.

Why is it that everytime after i leave the machine on for a while and when i access it again by clicking on some pages, the session expired message appeared? I don't recall implementing a timeout feature after some n seconds. What is causing this? Is it predefined in php.ini file?

Yes - session.gc_maxlifetime is the value that determines the lifetime of your session. It actually stands for 'Session Garbage Collection Lifetime' which in return means if the last access time ( fileatime() ) of the session file is less than time() - (subtracted by) session.gc_maxlifetime (value in seconds), than the session is no longer active and thus is labled as garbage and can be removed when the garbage collection routine makes it's pass, and results in a new session being spawned.

The default value for this is 1440 seconds (or 24 minutes).

Is there a way for me to dynamically control this value, alllowing users to change their own session timeout in their own user profile?

PHP Code:
 ini_set'session.gc_maxlifetime', ( int )seconds );
/*****************************
Change 'seconds' to actuall seconds
