Smtp
Does anybody know of a good way I can congure my computer so that PHP can use the mail() function? Right now I'm using Merak, but it's only a 30 day trial, and unless somebody can **** * ***** for 5.5.7, then I have yet to find a good "out-of-the-way" SMTP server program...

Are you running PHP on Windows or Linux?
If you're running it on Windows, just modify your PHP.INI file and add your ISP's outgoing mail server to make the mail() function work...

Windows... and ok. I didn't know how that worked. I need to figure out what my ISP's outgoing mail server is, then.

Do you use the email accounts they provide you with? If you're using Outlook, you can get it in the "Tools / Email Accounts" menu... |

I don't know if you can anymore, but you used to be able to connect to hotmail and yahoo via IMAP (port 143) But in order to do that you would have to compile imap support into PHP..
