cant connect

hi

i cant connect to my mysql server unless i use local host. ive tried to find anywhere that may start it using --skip-networking but i cant see that in the mysql script in init.d. ive got debian running is there something i dont know about here. the database has the right permissions. i cant even telnet to it on 3306.
