World country/region/city database script

Does anyone know whether one can purchase a database-script over world countries, regions and cities. This script is to be used in connection with a MySQL-database. If so, how much would this script approx. cost and where can it be purchased?

I don't have the reference handy, but there are companies out there that you can buy Zip code databases from. Maybe searching for such databases would lead you in the right direction.

i found this for sale ($40US) : URL, but i suspect it's not complete - it doesn't have all canadian provinces. maybe that's just the demo...

The database that you can query on that site is the complete database, but
a lot of cities are not present, indeed. The fact is, the main goal of that db is
to provide economical, demographics and political data about each country.

Now they have another (very complete) database with more than 1,800,000 cities/towns.

through http://dataservices.assemblysys.com

i found one there when i was browsing for under $100

I have found the database at http://www.countrydatabase.dk
more useful. It is simpel to use and cheaper than Assemblysys

Also you receive free updates twice a year.

Note that the database on http://www.assemblysys.com/dataServices/worldCities.php is far more complete and detailed than the other one, and still reasonably priced, I think.

You might want to try get the information at http://www.geodatasource.com . It provides Free Edition for Worldwide City Names, Latitude/Longitude, as well as distance calculation.
