I seriously doubt I'll have an answer for you, but what happens when you try to load a page?

ok first of all I have changed things a little, I am again using tomcat5(installed as a service) and a jk2 connector
I have been following the directions at this site http://www.dynamicobjects.com/d2r/archives/002574.html at this point whenever I load a page with tomcat and apache running I get a HTTP status 404 error I have tried having my test.jsp file in both htdocs and tomcat webapps folder with no success |

Have you tried adding the port to the end of the URL (so http://localhost/test.jsp:8009)? I doubt it'll work, but it's worth a shot.

tomcat and apache seem to work fine independantly from eachother, so I think there is something wrong with the configuration for the jk2 include

I've never had to config the connection myself, but a sysadmin I worked with for a couple of years once spent a week or two puzzling over how to get it to work right. And he was a pretty resourceful guy. There was some weird little trick to it, and I can't remember what it was. Wish I could be more helpful, but we've pretty much exhausted my knowledge store about this config issue.
