New Programmer

Hi,

I am newish to programming. I have done some C++ and visual basic at uni but would like to learn Java.

Does anyone know of a free IDE I could use to get started?
Also any books that they could recommend?

Thanks in advance!.

JBuilder from borland is a pretty good IDE, and it can be downloaded in a free foundation edition. it contains every modern feature such as intellisense and a gui editor and built-in documentation.

i cannot mention any books right now, but the transition from c++ to java should be simple and easy. and there is a ton of tutorials and guides online

I good, really good, compiler is BlueJ build by Univeristy of Kent (download at: http://www.bluej.org/download/download.html)! The only bad thing about it is that you need to have installed the JDK (you can download it from sum for free)!
