Assigning multiple number values to a word...

Greetings. I am trying to make some sort of cost calculator Javascript program. It consists of people (male and female) and places. It is arranged into three drop down boxes where you can select the place, then the number of males then the number of females and then have a calculate button. The place determines the cost per person. I am a little weak at Javascript and can't get my head around a Case study and the formula needed to calculate the result. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
