controlling win media player

I have embedded win media player as an active-x plug-in, and setting the parameters is no problem. However, when trying to control playback, I'm having real problems. I can target the player fine, as player.play() and player.stop() work great, but I cannot position the video using player.controls.currentPosition. If I read the currentPosition value and display using alert, nothing happens (the alert box works if I dipslay "hello world"), and setting it does nothing. I can however set currentPosition successfully as an active-x parameter. Anyone have any ideas as to how I get get this to work?
