Formatting Not Saving

I am using the following vba code:
Private Sub Shell_Actual_AfterUpdate()
If [Shell Actual] <= InvoicingDate Then
Me.First_Milestone_Shell.BackColor = vbRed
Else
If [Shell Actual] > InvoicingDate Then
Me.First_Milestone_Shell.BackColor = vbWhite
End If
End If

End Sub

The code works but when I close the form and reopen it the formatting is gone. I'm not using conditional formatting because I am already using that on the field and my understanding is that you can only use 3 conditional formatting's on a field.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks!
