Exclamation URGENT: Help need with MS Access.

Dear All,

I am new at MS Access but have been tasked to create a Database for my company.

Background:

7 subsidiaries have submitted their Excel spreadsheets with the following headings,

Institution_Name Material_Group Product_Description Vendor_Name Amount_Paid

Problem:

I need to be able to cross search all 7 spreadsheets utilizing either Institution Name, Material group etc.

1). Should I integrate all 7 spreadsheets into ONE lengthy table? Can't do it in excel... too long. Don't know how to integrate the tables in Access.

2). Or, can Access be used to cross search all 7 spreadsheets? If so, pls tell me how, thanx.

Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thank you and best regards.

Mark

Mark,

There is help available. However, it also depends on several other factors:
1) Are you consolidating the spreadsheets for corporate use?
2) Who needs access to this information when you are done?
3) Will you need to create an application?
4) What type of data security / integrity will be required?

It is possible to create one large table and Append all of the data to it. However, you lose the advantages of MS Access's relational capabilities.

Let's start here and maybe we can move further.

Smile

guy

first off don your right.....if you try to do everything into one
large table all the advantages ms access offers will go out the
window.

mark--
what you need to do is break things into logical pieces
Institutions
Material Names
Personel Names
ect

and have everything associated with that as an additional field
for that table

Hello Mark,

Having used the prod and poke senario to database desings, I found that Microsoft wizards give you a good starting platform for you to gain understanding. It is a lot of work to get from that stage to building a useful package.

www.ipi2internation.free-online.co.uk gives my latest efforts. Wathc out for the Web Based Email!!!

Here I have split the Recording into specific fields designed to minimize data yet allow Multi Department/Currency Transaction Recording and reporting. Currency Transactions really do take the biscuit though.
