Inserting Smilies into a form?

Hey..

I've just setup a really basic shoutbox for my website, but I was wondering how I could turn the displayed text in my shoutbox automatically into smilies? (like how it works for messageboards etc)

I've tried looking for tutorials or the code, but I can't find anything.. If anyone could help me, that would be awesome!!
