Using a Windows system?
Try running C:\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe This runs the MySQL Server in the background.... Then, in a DOS prompt, try running C:\mysql\bin\mysqld.exe |

When you're new to MySQL, I think it's good to look at the manual on http://www.mysql.com and for PHPMyAdmin on http://www.phpmyadmin.net
There are also a lot of good tutorials to find on how to use MySQL with PHP. There are to much good articles about this subject then we could ever post here. When you have a particular problem, I'll be glad to help you. Good luck and cheers,
