Problems removing mySQL as a service (win 2000)

Hi,
I wanted to upgrade 'mySQL' from 3x to 4x and have uninstalled the old version (3x) but cant remove the service entry. Its just stopped and disabled.

Ive tried searching the mySQL Manual without any joy and have searched the web but can only find this info...

Quote:
To remove the service, goto a DOS box and type 'mysqladmin -uroot -p shutdown' , type your master password if it asks for it. Type in 'mysqld --remove' and this will uninstall and remove the service.

Tried this and get...
'mysql is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file'

I have tried to reinstall 4x but it with v4.0.24 it installs but has no config file and dosent apear to be running.

I have tried installing v4.1.12a (which has a config wizard)
It wount accept my password/username etc and only installs if I use the Default.
Once installed it statst but then exits straight away.

Is the old service entry causing these reinstall issues or is something else the cause of the problem.

I have the same problem, and so do many others. Here is a working simple solution.
