Teachers using PHP and Mysql?
Just wondering if there are any other teachers out there using PHP and Mysql as a database combo as a tool for instruction and classroom use. I have been successful ( with loads of help from everyone here ) in building useful forms and databases for our school in Anchorage, Alaska. There is a growing need for schools to move online. Banking has done it. The medical industry is still behind. Schools are moving to online grades- but at snails pace.
I would like to hear the opinions from other interested devarticlites or teachers who have a thought on this subject. Many teachers in this field do not want to enter the online age. The enjoy the email, using the web, but don't want to move to online grades... hey, that means they have to be posting grades daily! ( Inside secret * Most teachers I know assess students but don't keep their gradebooks up to date as often as they would like. ) There is also the fear that grades and records are not secure, that parents going online will be afraid their child's records will be available to everyone. If I thought records online could not be protected, I wouldn't trust the banks and creditcards... Just some thoughts on Why elementary institutions haven't moved to online grades/ records yet... I would like to see it happen. From the little I've done to put a homework and newsletter source available to parents, the feedback has been all positive. The only thing parents complain about is the teachers' lack of consistant posting. Happy New Year to everyone. Good luck in the Year of the Sheep. May we all do things to make the world a better place. ![]()

Hi LBD,
3 years ago I was in my last year of high school and I was always in a constant debate with the teacher about whether or not schools should take homework, assignments, etc online. I actually wanted to develop an extranet for my high school, but I developed devArticles instead... I think that schools should have at least an intranet, at best an extranet where students can login, download assignments, send notes to teachers, etc -- not only will it encourage the Internet savvy students to work more proactively, but it will also open up a whole new world of communication between the "quiet" students in the class. They will be able to talk to the teacher over the Internet and discuss their needs and achievements without fear of talking in front of other students, etc. Basically I am all for schools coming online, but maybe marks and grades, etc should be stored on a non-connected off-site PC that students can't get access to. |

Hello Everybody
I am working as Systems Incharge and Teacher in relatively a new school located in Jaipur, India. Now I have developed a big network of almost 100 computers backed by 2 IBM and 1 Assembled server based on Win2K Operating System. I have all the things (excluding a permanent high bandwidth Internet connection) in my school. Now I have developed a website for my school also but that site has not much online matter to offer. As an experienced person I can tell you that Schools atleast here in India have limited budgets and earnings and running an online site with all the features required is very heavy for them. This is viewpoint from the side of a school. But right now I am trying to convince people in my school to have web based information system for the school for automating most of the process of school but I am facing fierce opposition and my life is almost in difficulties due to this. I even explained to CM of school to have website which will offer most of things online but he is not convinced as he thinks in India people are not web savvy (he is wrong). I have gone to a stage where I told that I am ready to work for 12 hours a day and I with 2 collegaues of me can develop most of things for the schools, so they can cut down the costs of development. only infrastructure will cost them. But no help! Regarding future of it I beleive Schools and Institutions has to offer online features otherwise the schools offering this facilities will leave them behind. Future is of a CONNECTED WORLD Right now I am working on secret development (not known to management of school) in which I am developing information system of my school quiety and slowly. Well overall as compared to other schools in my cities my school is quite advanced as per the technical implementation. |

Mytch and Peeyush :
I am very interested in what you are going through. If there is a way I can help, let me know. I am not a great programmer, knowing very little about php at the moment. I can make simple things with help from everyone here at Devarticles, but I've put a few helpful programs together for teachers to post homework and newsletters using simple forms: by use of php and mysql database. I also found some great free forum scripts, online classroom packages, etc. I'm in the process of putting an online library database together, one we are currently working with to input all our books and multimedia in the classrooms, and I'd be happy to share that when it is finished.
The WYSIWYG editor looks like a great script. I want my teachers to be able to make their own web pages online, upload photos, edit, create links, etc. without having to know html or use a (high cost) program like Dreamweaver, and having to ftp- talk about getting files all messed up! Sounds like you are following your dream. Good for you! Build it and they will come...aboard! After you do all the work, get it running, troubleshoot it and teach them how to use it...ugh. I know how it works! Mytch : Your were ahead of your teachers! Bet your ideas scared them to death! Our district is working to have a secure login page for all parents with kids in the district, where they could see their child's grades...but this is a ways in the future. At my school, I have set up an Intranet for students to practice using an Online classroom : Claroline. We are just K-6 and our teachers are not too keen on the need for these kids to know how to use online classrooms...so I can't force them, they are the teachers and I just keep the computers running and teach a basic curriculum. The Intranet is great since it is so easy to load pages and adjust content, plus it's secure and private. I am interested in publishing ( posting ) a few of the things I've created for my school for the general public. What is the best way to do this so others can just make a minor change here or there ( database user/ pass/ path ) and use it for themselves? Is this what is meant by " portable" ? Is there an article on this subject? Thanks, and good luck. |

Hi little...
Well I have already developed a small store management software specifically for the kindergarten section of my school. Now I am developing computer hardware managment part of the big software after that I would develop library management system. Well regarding giving teachers the facility to develop web pages is best part and I hope to have it in my school by next session. Where can I find this WYSIWYG editor? I am using ASP-MySQL combination to develop the software. Thanks for your support, I would surely keep on posting my problems in this forum. If you need any support or any kind of information please feel free to contact me, I would do my best to help you out. Please have a look at my school website, which I have developed. What is your website address? |
