How to get first 4 characters of a string?

I need to get the first four characters from a string. I have been searching books and the web for hours and can't find how to do it in PHP.

I remember years ago I used to do it in BASIC so it seems likely there is a way to do it in PHP.

Can anyone advise please. I am a beginner!

Checkout the substr() function.

Code:
substr('abcdef', 0, 4);

Many thanks.

I knew there must be a simple answer but I was wasting hours looking for it.
