Exclamation download file with header

Greetings

Firstly, thanks for this cool forum. I like the colors ...
I am developing a system to automate assignment submission and I choose to stpore in DB instead of file directory.
The uploading is good enuff, but my testing on downloading the files give me small problem.
I am using the following codes to download the file

getfile.php:
<?
$table="ece1011_1_5";
$query = "SELECT * FROM $table WHERE
stdnt_rollnum ='$session[idnum]' ";

$res = mysql_query($query)
or die("unable to read the file");
$data =@mysql_result($res,0,"file_data");
$type =@mysql_result($res,0,"file_type");
$file = @mysql_result($res,0,"file_name");//send file contents
header("Content-Type: $type\n");
print($data);
mysql_free_result($res);
?>

it seems fine for text.html ,txt files and images, the problem begins with .xls , .doc, where it tries to down the file getfile.php
or somtimes, it open the .xls with some weird things.

ANOTHER QUESTION , if I am to download anty .c or .cpp or equivalent file, how should I make it to execute directly upon down the files ?

thanks and hopw for a quick answer.

you need to set the content-disposition header for your attachments. Check out this site: http://www.bme.ie/index.php?m=PHP-APP-DL&language=en for more info and some nice examples.

As for the .c or .cpp files, you can't make them execute. if the user has a handler for that mime type installed (such as Visual C++) then they will load it automatically if the user has chosen "Open" from the dialog box... and it's impossible to set the mime types of a clients PC from a PHP script .
