PHP 5.0 Discussion
Thought it was about time to stir up some discussion on here.
So what are everyone's views on PHP 5? I'll get the ball rolling by saying that I think the new object model is fantastic. I know a lot of people are saying it adds unnecessary complication but its not a compulsary part of using php. Anyone can pick it up and learn the basics the same as they can now but it adds extra development abilities for those using it for big projects that just weren't available before. I would be interested to see what everyone else thinks about the object model or anything else from php 5. -KM- |

I do like the object modelform. It enables you in a better way to make the class/objects work better in large self inclusions.

ASP is a super popular language... it allows a certain amount of object oriented design, however, it does not force it upon you like some languages do. I think this is great because it allows one to program in a style that suits them. Neither language is what some critics call "Fully Compliant" with the definition of an object oriented language... SO WHAT? IE and most other browsers are not 100% compliant with CSS2, but does that stop developers from developing fully CSS2 websites? We use what works, and where we must adapt we do so.

As a follow-up, I should add, I still do all my development in PHP 4 as I see no real reason to develop w/ PHP 5. I have php 4 and 5 on my laptop w/ IIS, but I really haven't done anything w/ 5 yet. Eventually I will load up some of my apps in 5 and see if there is any performance difference. I may start new developments on 5 in the future, but right now there really isn't any reason to do that.

My main concern is that so many webhosts will stick with php 4.x to avoid breaking customers scripts and it may mean that php 5 takes a long time to really catch on if it does at all. Guess time will tell...
