I've found a new way to get the contact list from gmail. I managed to get the script working first time which is always nice. I'm using libgmailer now which does far more than I need.

I've posted some sample code on my blog for grabbing a gmail contact list.

I should have posted about this a little while ago but I've also put together a class for grabbing the contact list from msn messenger.

It logs in to the msn messenger network rather than hotmail/msn webmail so it will log the user out of msn messenger as it grabs the contacts. I don't think there is a way around this but I'm still investigating.

Does anyone know of a script to grab hotmail webmail?

I'm also still looking for aol webmail and any other popular webmail services.

coolkitrak, I'd give ehsan's script a go, if memory serves it worked first time for me.

noobadmin, I don't know if you are following this topic or not now but I have just released a tutorial on my blog looking at the complete process from grabbing a contact list to sending the emails. Only drawback is that it only works for msn and gmail at present. It should give you a fair idea how to integrate other services into the script though.

I have found a really cheap import script. It is available at www.verszuz.nl/addressimport
It will import hotmail, yahoo and gmail address books. There is even a free version available.

Just a quick update to let anyone interested that I've just updated this class to improve error handling. It was in the habit of kicking up a bunch of errors is anything went wrong. It should fail 'gracefully' from now on.

[edit]It looks like the forum rules have been changed so I can't currently post urls - there is an active link in my original post.

Alternatively, if anyone is interested you can reconstruct the following

The idea is to stop people coming into the forum just to post a link to improve their search engine rankings and then never returning, never contributing to the community.

It's strict but unfortunately increasingly necessary and hence common.

I think you need 30 posts to be able to post active links. Until then just break your link up as I have done at the end of my post above and then anyone interested can recreate the link.

HI,
As per the idea of stopping people to post once and forget about contributing is good enough. In fact it is applicable to me as well. I've posted links to my Grab Yahoo class and didn't continue my contribution. FYI, I have never intended to post the link here to help my site's page rank in search engine. I thought this topic is good enough to show my work and thus did post my work reference. Anyhow I hope I can contribute more but really am busy with settling down at new place (Canada). I hope to be regular in near future.

Regards,

Ehsan

Hi Ehsan

I don't think it is really links like yours which the new rule is trying to prevent (although I could be wrong), it was in an existing thread, on-topic and a genuinely valuable resource.

You only need to look at the number of views for the thread to realise that there is a genuine desire for more info on getting contact lists and your script solves that problem for yahoo.

It could have something to do with the fact that the people promoting these paid services tend to make one post and then never return, giving nothing to the community. It doesn't speak highly of their customer service standards.

Just a guess though.

Which script are you interested in? There are a few mentioned in the thread for various different services.

nascency, is it possible you can post the script in the forum?
This seems to be a hot topic.

I tried your URLs above and they seemed to time out.

I've just tried my blog and everything seems to be working normally so it may have just been a transient issue. I'll keep an eye on things over the next couple of days.

I'm always reluctant to distribute any code I've written too widely as it makes maintaining that code and offering support a real nightmare.

Since I've started building these scripts I've made at least one major update and set up a web service for those people with limited hosting.

Hopefully the links will be working now anyway.

nascency,

Your blog works now, and I saw the code you're referencing...
Looks decent and trustworthy and I anticipate testing it on my own. =)

I find the answers in this thread are getting mixed together and some people are having trouble tracking down the examples provided. I have opened a new topic, not as a duplicate, but as a clean thread for further discussion.

This topic was starting to attract spam. =(

I will close this topic, any further discussion is encouraged in the new thread.
