Does it have to be completely done in PHP?

Perhaps you could use Yahoo's export feature and parse the file somehow.

If i remember correctly, it's possible to have outlook save your address book as a comma delimted file.
All you need then is for the User to upload the file to your PHP site... You could then parse the file and use the data as you see fit.

Here's how Yahoo describes how to use their system:
Quote:
First, export the information from Microsoft Outlook:

1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP) or 2003.
2. Open the "File" menu and select "Import and Export."
3. Select "Export to a File" and click "Next."
4. Select your "Contacts" folder and click "Next."
5. Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" and click "Next."
6. Select the "Contacts" folder to export from and click "Next."
7. Specify a location where you would like to save the file, and enter a name for the .CSV file. Then click "Next."
8. Make sure to check the box next to "Export Contacts from the Contacts Folder," and then click "Finish" to export the data to the .CSV file.

The Comma Separated Values (.CSV) file generated in the process above is readable by Yahoo! Address Book.

Next, import that file into the Yahoo! Address Book:

1. Open your Yahoo! Address Book and make sure that you are signed into your account.
2. Click the "Addresses Options" link on the right of the Address Book page.
3. Click the "Import/Export" link.
4. In the Import section, select "Microsoft Outlook (.CSV file)."
5. Enter the location and name of the file you exported from Outlook, or click the "Browse" button to find the file on your system.
6. Click the "Import Now" button.

I'm reading that in their help system ...

You could try modelling your system to mimic that. [parsing the comma delimeted file]

Hi,

I dont know of a specific way to go direct from yahoo.. but you can export them from yahoo to a file to your computer.. then save the code below to a php file and run it to upload/parse your exported file --- this will work with any readable file that contains email addresses.

// -- BEGIN CODE --//

<?php

if($_POST['submit'] != "Send File"){
echo "<FORM ENCTYPE=\"multipart/form-data\" ACTION=\"$PHP_SELF\" METHOD=POST>
Send this file: <INPUT NAME=\"userfile\" TYPE=\"file\">
<INPUT TYPE=\"submit\" name=submit VALUE=\"Send File\">
</FORM>";
}

if($_POST['submit'] == "Send File"){
$file = $_FILES['userfile']['tmp_name'];

$data = fread(fopen($file, "r"), filesize($file));
preg_match_all('/(\w+@\w+(?:\.\w+)+)/', $data, $array);
$emails = $array[1]; //returns emails as an array

foreach($emails as $v){
/* do stuff here with each email
address found in the loop.. email address is set as $v
this is where to do a mysq insert....
*/

echo "Found: $v<br>";

/// -- END Functions -- ////
}
}

?>

// -- END CODE -- //

Why not just post scripts here to help the collective?
Helping one person via email isn't very effecient.

Five steps to write contact Importer

Hi All,

Let me tell you how to write contact importer or address book grabber for hotmail.com,
yahoo.com,gmail.com,aol.com or for any other contact importer.

This is not so hard to do but little bit time consuming work, I am writing all steps,

1. Need to use web container, in PHP this CURL, an webcontainer works as a hidden browser
but let you access all the pages that it browsed and let you save cookies also. Web conainer
automatically add/edit/delete cookie values that it find while brosing any web page. This behavior of
webcontainer is very useful for accesssing contact or accessing any web site.

2. Login to the site by using webcontainer, you should not miss a single page,logic, values of anything it
do for for login, Yahoo do some trick while it let user login, it send a challenge value what it use conjuction with
password to validate user. Yahoo use javascript to get MD5 value of password, and it add this value with challenge value
to identify user.

3. After successfully login, you should access the address page.

4. While you access any webpage by using an webcontainer, then you get the HTML of that page in a variable, when you access address page then you get all the html that was used to render address page, that means you also got the all address in html format.

5. Parse html page to find out all the addresesses inside that page.

It is easy to collect email addresses from CSV, rather from html page in address page. Yahoo let u export your address book as csv file, so grab that page and take out emails for yahoo. Gmail and aol send addresses in the form of javascript array, so grab javascript and parse and take out email, name for gmail and aol.com.

I hope this may help you to write an address book importer in any language.

Navigating to that page, I see it asking for my Hotmail/Gmail/Yahoo username and password.
I would advise anyone to *not* fill out that information.
For all we know this page may document your username and password, potentially hijacking your account.

Instead, I suggest Zeeshan to offer the PHP script used and perhaps explain a little what it does.

Post the code you're using to grab the address book details from Yahoo. People can then run the script themselves, without running the risk of giving you their login details to their email accounts.

hi i found this on a website, it is very affordable and functional, have a look at this, if it can help you..

Fast MSN Contact List Grabber is a very advanced and complete Module that not only fetches the email addresses from the MSN address book but also send emails to the selected email addresses. This module is required by almost all of the dating websites, a few examples can be seen on hi5.com, orkurt.com etc.

I don't understand... why is everybody charging for this... the manual process really isn't all that difficult.

I would be weary of paying for something and giving out my email password.

I agree with you atleast about some individuals who cannot be trusted for email passwords, and also i visited some of them their scripts even are not fully working and weird, however, you can trust reputed and registered companies, because it is used in hi5.com, ringo.com, orkurt.com (even when it was not with google) so if you can trust on them by giving out your password then you must be able to trust companies like Fast Creators

Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo Contact list grabber / importer

a friend of mine bought scripts from them and they are very sharp in providing support and also they are reliable. You know the difference between a Company and Individual.....

Lightbulb

I would suggest downloading the trial versions of:

http://www.AddressBookImport.com

Note what it says in the top paraghraph of the download page.

then simply removing the mail() function so the scripts dont email a list of the persons contacts to the addressbookimport.com site meaning you actually get the full working "purchased" version with a little modification to the trial scripts.

and i am only suggesting this... i cant be held responsible for anyone actually implementing this!!!

hi,

hope it is not too late. i've recently released a class that serves the purpose for Yahoo. class named Grab Yahoo returns address book content, messenger list and number of unread mails as an array. You can manipulate the array whichever way you like. for live example please refer to my demo site:

Grab Yahoo Demo

You can download the script from either weberdev or phpclasses. Following are the URLs to download:

Grab Yahoo Download [Latest] from phpclasses.org <- LATEST
Grab Yahoo Download [not latest] from Weberdev.com <-- not latest

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks and God Bless!!

I've been looking for free scripts to grab hotmail, yahoo contacts etc for a couple of hours and everything I've found have been wanting $100 or more.

The trial version of AddressBookImport looked promising but I'm not prepared to give them all the contact email addresses for my users for them to spam. I don't know if the trial version has been updated since VBAssassin's post but from my quick check of the code deleting the mail function won't stop them taking a copy of all the email addresses. I only checked the hotmail script but it appeared that there is no way to prevent them making a copy.

Anyway, getting back on track my thanks to ehsan for the yahoo script and a double thanks for directing us to phpclasses.org. As well as his script there are several other interesting scripts - MSN Contact list Grabber, Grab Gmail Address Book.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a AOL contacts grabber. It is definitely something that is going on to my to-do list but it's a long list and I don't spend much time on it.

I haven't tried any of the scripts yet, I'm hoping they all work well.

welcome

You are welcome nascency. One of my friends has developed the gmail grabber which is also present at phpclasses.org. Anyhow, I have tried to work on AOL address book grabber, but within very short time and look around AOL does not have any export option. If I were to parse the address book page, I will only get few items like name, email, phone but not all that is present in the address book. I've not yet given up. Hopefully after I relocate to Canada in early september, I will have a go with the script. Lets hope for the best.

Regards,

Ehsan

Hi Ehsan

I've actually had some problems getting the other two classes (MSN and Gmail) to work. I posted a comment to his blog at rupom.info but it went down shortly afterwards (Hope it was nothing I did!) and has not been back up since. I've just sent him an email, about an update to the class posted at phpclasses which he talked about on his blog.
