They release patched packages for all their products on a timely manner. So, there may be 2, 3, 4 different versions of the same software - but the latest version will be the most up to date version with fixes. Make sure that your registration info is correct with correct email address and they will notify you of any changes in the package. You can email tech support with your problem and they will tell you if it has been fixed in another package.

They have released standalone patches in the past, but I think they have gotten out of that habit....

I agree with jsilve1. I use VIM 90% of the time, doing most of my development on the command line of my remote servers. It's got lots of great time saving features that I really miss when I'm using MSwindows based editors. Yep, sure it comes with a steep learning curve, but it's so worth it once you get past the few basic hurdles and start to learn it's powerful features.

When I do have to edit something on my windows box, I use NoteTab, a great ASCII text editor.

I have been using AceHTML for a long time now and I think that it is a great one. The new version 5 does a whole lot and it was just released as freeware. Check it out at URL

Smile PHP Editors

PHPEdit has worked very well for me. Oh, it does have a couple of quirks that keeps me on my toes, but nothing insurmountable, especially because it's free.
I did read all of the posts here, and I noticed that there was only one mention, and I was wondering if it was because lack of exposure, or if it had been looked at and dismissed.

1st Page 2000 is pretty good all round editor, though a bit shy of php stuff.

For Linux though:

Quanta is great. Though i have a few problems with its stability. And Bluefish is good as well but again a bit short on some php stuff at the moment.

PHP MAster Editor is bu far the best editor and compile tool in combination with Dreamweaver MX i think that are a nice solution for small projects.

Zend studio personal edition is a bit slow but very good debuggin tool in addition to the both above.

Right now I just use the CofeeCup editor, but it isn't great for php. Since I've seen Komodo talked about so much in this thread i'm gonna take a look at it

Dreamweaver MX

I still prefer Dreamweaver MX, although I have tinkered with a couple light-weight applications such as WinSyntax and PHP Pad. Sometimes, I don't need all the functionality of Dreamweaver, and just want something fast.

Here is my 2cents:

NuSphere PHPEd:
Great product, bad implementation. I really hate to say that because I was really excited about it when I first tried it. I was a bit impressed at first, but I've found it tried to do too much that was not needed, and where it could have shined it lacked.
It's implementation of project management is just silly. Its sort of a waste of RAM having this thing loaded. With a few minor/key improvements that can be the best PHP editor around.

Zend Studio:
I loved this editor in my infancy of php. After my second project using php I was done. Code completion and function definitions were what kept me coming back for more. Once I had most of my function calls memorized this RAM hungry, window flickering editor was toast. (It still has potential).

All the rest I've tried. Some of you posted about most of them so I won't go into great detail listing them all.

I've found the most useful editors to be:

1. homesite (ALMOST nobody codes strickly in PHP so its flexibility
is nice)
2. ultraedit (What can't you do with this thing?) I currently have over 40 macros saved that I've been using for over a year. These save me tons of time when writing batch scripts or other odd tasks. For PHP the latest version is nice as it has a lot of features that any coder would enjoy. When comping pages I open dreamweaver... when coding for real I have to pop open ultraedit.

At work I use Evrsoft's First Page 2000 on Hardcore Mode. It's very close to Homesite, but free. At home I use usually Homesite. All I really need is the color coding. It's a big help in catching mistakes. I might have to take at some of the editors mentioned though. Additional features like debugging could be nice.

The last post brings up a good point.
I gather from most posters to this topic that everyone wants a simple editor that doesn't try to do everything, but does a few key things very well.

Main Items:

1. Syntax Highlighting / Color Coding
2. Smart Indenting
3. AutoCompleting
4. Auto Correction
5. Debugging

Personally, I like editors that highlight brackets when you position near its match.

Actually, Editplus was my editor of choice a few years ago before I discovered UltraEdit.

I hear multiedit is gaining speed though... I need to try that.
I've been really satisfied with Ultraedit though. Just when you think another editor has a leg up on Ultraedit, they release a new and improved version that tops them all.
