This tutorial was written a while back and better techniques could now be employed to achieve the same thing. Namely, one would probably use loadVars objects and the onLoad handler to determine when the text file containing the user count was completely loaded before attempting any operation on the variable. If the variable is not loaded and you try to incriment it, you'll get funny results. There's a tutorial on loadVariables and LoadVars objects over at my site along with stacks of other tutorials. Enjoy.
