PWS installation did not work for my W98SE computer with 20GB free, and 750 MHz.
I followed every step in the article on how to install PWS. I downloaded relevant files from MS, which were obsolete, as they did not work. The file dates were 1997. I downloaded Mtsetup.dll which was newer. The PWS installation still did not work. I located my W98SE installation disk, where files were dated, 4/23/99. In each attempt to install PWS the error message related to SYSOCMGR.EXE with invalid page fault. "Removing All" between attempts did not succeed. The message indicated Microsoft Transaction Server Setup call to ICatalogUpdate ApplyChanges failed. Unless someone is kind enough to help me, my only option is to sign up with a Web host, for which I am not yet ready. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Bill B |

Hi Bill,
I can't help with PWS, but I can offer a smaller footprint alternative. I have tested several freebie personal servers and the one I like best is Abyss Web Server, available from URL . I am currently having problems with SSI but the support people at Abyss are very helpful. Try it. ![]() |

I feel your pain
Hey Bill,
I'm having a similar problem. In my case, I must have inadvertently deleted a file and now I can't run PWS, uninstall or reinstall it. If you come across the answer let me know. Although, I really think in my case, it's time to upgrade. Windows 98 is pretty antique. Last edited by aspnewbie : June 21st, 2003 at 06:34 PM. |

Hi aspnewbie,
So far I spent an immense amount of time on the subject. I do have a PWS running, and just installed MySQL. I have to suspend activities now. However, tomorrow I will install PHP and ASP. The supplier of the ASP plug-in indicates it is not intended for W98, but I had seen comments on the Forum stating it worked. After the next two steps, I will give you an account and references. Hi aspnewbie,
Last night when I posted my reply to you I was excited because the suggestion from rjsmith in this thread worked so well. His post suggested to try the server from www.aprelium.com/abyssws. The installation went well and I tested the server from another computer on my home network. I also installed MySQL, as suggested at the Aprelium web site. The green light on my system tray suggested the installation went alright. My next step was going to be to install PHP and test it, and then test PHP with MySQL. Following that I was going to install ASP. As I am quite new to all this I am sure I overlook some simple steps, but the php does not work with my test file. (The books I have did not help). At this moment I hope to receive some help to the question I posted on the forum. If you read Aprelium's Forum, it is quite good. Many are running php and MySQL using Aprelium's Server, Abyss. On the same forum, I also read that ASP from selisoft worked with Windows 98. Let me know whether this helps. I will continue to troubleshoot the applications. Bill |
