Using this example for different file types

Hi there

Firstly, thanks for the brilliant article, very imformative! However I was wondering if it would be possible to use some of this code for uploading files such as MS Word and MS Excel to a MySQL db? I've seen a fair few examples such as this for photos, or examples for reading in plain text from a file into db, then displaying it etc. But I've not seen any examples of how to upload word files etc, and store info such as author, subject in a table alongside it? If anyone knows of any such articles or examples, please let me know! I'm sure it should be relatively straightforward, as all I want to do is upload the files, and then be able to see what files are in there. Clicking on a partcular file should open it into its format, e.g. if an MS Word file was uploaded, then clicking on the file name should open it in MS Word. Also be able to delete documents. I'm very new to this type of programming (done some Oracle DBMS and C++ b4), so any/all help would be appreciated! I'm sure this article could be adapted in some way....but maybe it's too big for a beginner like me to understand how to adapt it? I don't need all the album stuff.

Cheers

why no demo?

I don't understand why the author has not provided a simple link to a working example of his 5,000,000 word tutorial. Sorry to sound crabby but isn't it common-sense to provide your readers a taste of what they will find when they follow the instructions provided in the tutorial?! As a reader, I want to know if I will like the final product (the functionalities, the features...) before I start working on it!
Heck I might as well spend money and order a gallery from the below sites; at least I know what I am getting.
