Why does all files need to be changed to jpg or png? If I want to upload a gif, for example a vector graphic image or some other sort of image with few colors, and I want it to stay in gif-format, will that make things more difficult when using the image later on or...?

And: How do I install the supplied image conversion packages?

Hi Torkil, Unfortunately, the newer versions of GD don't support GIF formats. Because of copyright laws, royalties would have to paid, and because GD is an open-source project, they've decided to drop support for GIF and not pay the fees. I don't blame them, as the costs can get very high... I'm not sure of any other packages that do support GIF manipulation...
