Basic Question About CGI/Perl

Hey all,

I've been looking on several websites for this, but can't find it.

I'm totally oblivious to how CGI/PERL works, but I need to do the following:

On a static HTML page, I need to define a variable that is the filename of an image (clients.gif). Then, include HTML code, and have this variable inserted in certain places. How can I do this? I would love to use PHP, but my client's server doesn't support it. I tried JavaScript, but don't know anything...perhaps this would be a better approach?

Any help is greatly appreciated,

P.S. Please provide as much code and documentation as possible as I don't know anythnig about CGI/PERL.
