Choice of Editor?
I'm just curious to know what everyone uses to code their sites, scripts, etc...
I've been searching for the past while and have been using a few at the same time to try and find the one I like best. Currently I use HTML-Kit, and have tried Maguma Studio Light. I haven't used HomeSite, although I heard there used to be a freeware version when Allaire owned it... Not sure if it's true or not. If everyone could list their editors and any possible links to the authors' sites, it would be appreciated.

I use Homesite 5.. if Homesite ever has been free, it was probably when Nick Bradbury (btw, the creator of topstyle) owned it.. he later sold it to allaire, and joined their dev team.. or something like that..

I've tried a whole batch of editors over the last few years and keep coming back to Dreamweaver, probably because that's the one I started out with and am most comfortable with.
Depending on whether I'm playing with PHP or C# I'll also use PHPEdit or WebMatrix for specific projects, to knock together a quick proof of concept or small site. For other quick and easy projects I use CodeCharge to generate a basic framework and then tweak the code using Dreamweaver. I'm also a true geek, so end up trying out whatever else I see, until the novelty wears off... ![]() |

For html projects I just use Dreamweaver since I'm lazy. When I need to get some PHP coding done I switch over to Editplus . I like it because of its color coding features. It doesn't just work for PHP but it works for many other languages too.

If you want an excellent HomeSite knock-off, check out 1stPage (http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage/). I don't know how they got away with it, honestly... I used this for a while at a company who had yet to get enough licenses of their editing software, and it's not bad. For a spoiled HomeSite/CF user, it's just missing the tag help and dialogs and more advanced stuff like VSS integration.

I remember seeing that Editor before, but I can't remember why I didn't download it.
Does it support syntax highlighting for PHP? |

um, well since I don't use PHP, I don't know, but I would bet that it does since 1) it is not affiliated with any particular language and 2) it seemed to highlight everything else I used.

I tried 1stPage2000 once.... it seems a very good editor for the money!
- seeing as though it is free!! lol I am pretty layzee when it comes to doing most things, so I prefer to be able to add a table using the WYSIWYG mode in Dreamweaver... then go back to the code view and carry on there. I just got Dreamweaver MX and it is awesome! I used DW 3 and 4 before this... version 4 was ok, but I hated it cos it wouldn't colour my code...grey seemed to be the only option... now MX has colour coding for PHP, ASP, ColdFusion, XML etc etc.. pretty much any language... it also offers database support ... not tried that yet though! I'm off to a Macromedia seminar in a couple of weeks... so we'll see what they have to say about it!! I remember once when I used front page express....... oh god, the ignorance of youth....... |

well, i use a number of editors, mainly notepad, win2k version (has more shortcuts then older versions), PHPEd, DreamweaverMX, topstyle (for css), and i have my own editor that ive created at home, (very usefull if i want to update somepage on my site and i dont have ftp access)
i probally use dreamweaverMX and PHPed the most, but if it comes down 2 it, i really love to hand code, none of the wysisyg Bullsh*t |
