Creative Web Development Assigments

Hi, all.

As I have just graduated from University in Computing (Mainly Internet development) I intend to make use of my skills and to try and earn some money from it.

I aim to advertise myself to my local community, but also i'd like to put out some projects of my work. What I would like is for you knowlegable peps to come up with some possible (unique creative) projects I may undertake.

For example, I could create a community website that details the goings on in the community etc.

Ok.. try this... create a website for your company, add the ability to send/recieve email via a webclient, and even think about maybe a message board of some sort.. or a news page

I'm with Nicat...

The best way to get yourself and your work known is to put up your own site... and then you can offer the extended services through the site.

Unfortunately, not having your own website, to promote your skills, won't get you far when you're trying to get yourself known...

I too concur.
If you have some time on your hands you may want to try investigating what type of business flourishes in your community.

Look for businesses that do well but have a market that is fairly saturated.

The reason I say this is because in that type of market companies that are doing the same work have a hard time differenciating themselves from their competitors. This is where you come in.

Offer to build something... who cares what... as long as they can see some value in it and hopefully can use it to win over their clients/potential customers with the tool.

One such market is Real Estate... unfortunately a lot of good Internet development firms have already figured this out... so good luck.

Not stupid you

That's exactly what I meant.. that's what you'd be doing... Only reason why I'm suggesting it is because I'm kind of working on something like that now myself... I have part of the interface built but havent had much time to work on the last part of it

Nicat,

What provoked your decision to take on such a project... was it to further develop your skills or was it to build a product that could compete with the likes of products such as Imp, Squirel, and NeoMail?

Both actually,

I wanted to be able to say that hey, I developed a completely dynamic webclient! That and it's always better (at least in my opinion) when you know why it works and how it works, and if you build and design it then you know both of those other things

Plus, I was bored.. needed a project.. decided that since I have a mailserver of my own to try it.. so far so good

Squirrel, neo mail and imp all have wonderful features, I just think that they could be improved on

Plus, it's not something that many people have delved into entirely, at least not in php.. so I figured I'd jump in feet first...

Besides, you get a certain amount of pride when you complete a hard project.. and it always tastes better if you cook it yourself and cook it right

Ah yes... the answer that I was looking for. The same answer that drives most of us to do things that we look back on an say... WOW, I can't believe I had the audacity to take this on.

I've actually created myself a project that I hope to take commercial when its done also.

The plus side to this is that if the competitors see that you've built a site or product, they may also contact you to out-do what you have already done... It's a good way to get yourself into a certain niche, and milk it for all there is!
