Do You host your own site on a DSL line, if Yes
I am thinking of hosting my own website. I know how to do it and have the hardware and software to do it, but I have been told that a DSL line can only support a few simulteneous users.
Here is what I have. I have P3 800 server class box with 20GB disk space and 1GB Ram I have a static IP address I have a Linux box that's well equiped I have a Solaris ultra 10 box I have Win2k server I have a 25 user Exchange 5.5 software. The site I am thinking of should have no more than 15 users (if lucky) at any given time. Should I pony up additional money and let someone else host it or should I use my DSL line which I only use for about 2 hours a day. Frankly, I don't think I am getting my money's worth of usage and need to find something to justify paying for the dsl line. BTW: I if I do, I will most likely use ASP and MYSQL (can't afford licences) on WIN2K so I can put my Exchange app to use but I can also use PHP and some open source content manegement stuff, but then, I can't use my Exchange app. ( still learning PHP) So do you host your own site and if yes, what's your experience? Thanks assigned |

I'm with Epyon on that. How did you work out 15 concurrent users? That's a hell of alot of bandwidth for a DSL line to handle. We're hosted by PerlCoders.com and we've peaked at 255 users online at any one time. We're running through 2 sets of quad t3 lines and our load limit was about 82%.
I would really recommend hosting as a proper web host. That way if something goes wrong, you get support, etc. I know you say you know how to do stuff and that's great, but if your site gets popular quickly then you'll probly have to move it to a web host anyway. Some packages start at $7.95 a month. I would recommend using one of these packages and upgrading to a bigger package should the time come. |

DSL
I use my ADSl line for hosting a few prototype websites. Its a W2K box running Apache/PHP and a handy way of making very rapid site changes as I can access the box via a 100mb network connection (two network cards) instead of the 10 Mb router connection.
I also administer hosted sites (one Linux, one Windows) and the Linux box costs £60/month (20Gb traffic/mo) on UK2net.com If your traffic is low you can run DSLhosted sites but >10 people at once and it will crawl for them... |

Most DSL can handle a moderate traffic site or three. I wish I had DSL, cause I'd host all my sites myself. I know someone who runs a site that gets about 50,000 impressions dialy on his DSL as well as several other lower traffic sites. I don't think ADSL could handle that much, but a decent DSL should be able to handle regular web traffic for a smallish site or so.
