Unhappy Network connectivity

Hi experts,

I really need your assistance. I am trying to setup simple client/server architecture between two machines. The server is running on Windows 2000 (desktop PC) and the client is operating on Windows XP Home edition (Laptop). I created a workgroup on the server machine called Adserver and I’m trying to get the client (laptop) connected to the same workgroup. The IP addresses are statically assigned based on private network scheme. The network connection seems to be fine because I can PING each other but I’m unable to access the shared folders on each system.

On the Server end:

Under “My network place” I could see the client (Laptop) machine, but when I try to access it I keep getting an error message saying:

\\<computer name> is not accessible (The network path was not found)

On the client end:

Under “My network place” I can view the workgroup “Adserver” (icon) but when I try to access it display an error message saying that:

Adserver is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this network resource

  • How can I share resources between these two machines? Do I have to create a user account for the client to login into the server machine and vice versa? If so how to assign user account for the client machine? Because under Computer Management (w2K) there are two types users (Local Users and Groups) which one should I use?
  • I tried creating a user account on the server for the client machine but it was requesting for the user name, full name. What is the difference?
  • How to assign rights for both the machines?

Please help me. I am really looking forward to your comments. Thanking you all in advance.

Hmm - didn't MS turn on the Personal Firewall by default in one for their recent SP's? Check that the personal firewall isn't blocking ports 445 and 139 on any machines you want to network locally.

Yes, they did.. however, this problem is due to the file sharing not being enabled.. you have to physically turn it on and share out a folder in order to be able to see the windows xp machine on the network.. otherwise it'll apear as not being valid.. Either use the networking wizard to share out the resources or drag the folders to the "Shared" folder.. also, right click and choose sharing to enable sharing..

HTH

Ahh - of course..... I guess if the firewall was on they wouldn't be able to see anyone on the network anyway... d'uh.
