Angry Photoshop 6.0 - Pixel issue?

Hello there,

My PS 6.0 is beginning to act strange! When using the contract command (Select>Modify>Contract) I keep getting the following warning:

'No pixels were selected'

I am trying to create a 'gelly' button in accordance with the book called, Down and Dirty Tricks 7.0 - author: Scott Kelby, page 162. Doing this tutorial Scott is using the contract technique, but my software program start displaying above warning, which in the past never seem to be a problem.

I have experimented creating a button from an image instead, which seem to work. But everytime I use colours above warning is displayed.

The button is created by using a background colour, which then is contracted by 20 pixels and filled with a another colour - but I can get is done. What is one to do? Any suggestions from a PS expert?

That error means that the area/layer you've just tried to select/manip does not contain any pixels/data...

When this happens, 99% of the time you'll find you are on the wrong layer.

If you are trying to do this on the "background" layer, try activating the background layer by double clicking it, then pressing ok on the dialog that pops up to make it an active / editable layer.

This happens to me often, you might have just created a new layer and it is empty.
