This question is asked a million times, but i am asking it again!
I wanted to spruce up my website, by adding database support. I was wondering which of the following to use Php, Jsp, Asp, or Coldfusion. I know jsp and coldfusion really well, and asp resonably well(coding some internal websites for the university). But for my personal website , i dunno what to use. I thought of going for JSP, but there are not many free jsp hosting sites. Ditto for cold fusion. I found quite a few free servers for Asp. I also thought about php(cuz its open source, its language is pretty easy and all that), and thought there might be some good hosting sites for that, though i dint serach for ne. What would u do if u were me? Which one do u suggest i should/could/would want to go for? Thanks |

Hi Francis,
Well, since you don't know PHP and ASP that well, you could save a lot of time by coding in JSP or CF, since you know the languages.. if hosting cost is an important factor, I think PHP is the cheapest alternative, then after that, ASP.. ![]()

It solely lies in where you host your site and what languages they support. I've looked around for alot of web hosts and PHP would probably be the easiest to find hosting for, then ASP. If your website is personal, you could use it to help improve your weaker programming languages.
My 2 pennies.

Cold Fusion Hosting
Free Cold Fusion hosting is available at http://www.cfm-resources.com/. It does have a $29.95 setup fee.
I used this for posting test projects. The free site has a 10mb limit, and allows 1 ODBC connection (I used an Access database). Its a great place to put up test applications, especially if you are learning Cold Fusion, or you are developing a prototype. Commercial accounts are available from $49.95 - $149.95. |

Not jsp unless you're equipped either to have a slow site or you know your host has some kickass hardware. I imagine PHP'll be your most flexible and most portable alternative, as almost everybody has it. If you go with jsp or even asp or cf, you're locked into either a given server platform or limited hosting alternatives.

PHP was my first real server-side language... and after advancing on to learn many others, I still code in PHP if given the choice... I think cost is a huge factor here... and to re-enforce what others have said, it seems that PHP is the most widely supported nowadays...
Additionally, Perl's a fun one if you have time to be frustrated, confused, and all-around upset... =) [gotta love/respect it though] |

Heh, I learned perl first and found that having that under my belt made PHP pretty easy to learn. I tend to do Web work in PHP but to scrap together CLI scripts for mangling files in perl (that's what it's really for, after all). I'm trying to move toward using PHP for it all, though.
I was forced into doing a site in jsp once. The company had very limited hardware (an ok box, but it was very high traffic and dynamic and they insisted on keeping the db server and the Web server on the same box). It was a nightmare. I wound up writing server-side include logic rather than jsp in some cases to ease load on the box. Plus jsp's verbose and a bit of a pain to maintain and debug. If you've got a real reason for using it, cool, but I was forced into it for no good reason. Can you tell I'm not big on jsp? ![]() |

I just finished learning Perl... it was a pain... the cause of many frustrations... but in the end it definately helped my understand certain concepts of other languages... and appreciate the ease of PHP
Its interesting to see how popular PHP has become considering its up against some pretty big contenders (Microsoft's ASP and the ever-growing world of Java's JSP)... |
