Redirect iframe if page cannot be displayed

Is it possible to redirect an iframe to a different page if the desired page can't be found or the server is down?

one way I thought of doing it would be to direct the iframe to the desired page, then weight a few seconds and check the locationName. If that is blank then change the location to the alternate page. But that might be cheesy and I don't know how to write the code for it anyway.
