Unhappy Upgrading from WINDOWS ME to WINDOWS PRO?

Hello there,

Before installing WIN 2000 Pro software, I would like to know if it is possible to install WIN 2000 Pro on a PC which is currently running WIN ME? Or do you suggest a clean set-up?

I am interested in keeping existing files, in particular emails, settings etc. Can I just install the WIN 2000 Pro without expericing any problems later, such as STOP errors, etc? And if installing the WIN 2000 Pro, will it override existing file programs?

Please comment, perhaps there is a tutorial or referral somewhere?

My PC Specs:

OS: WIN ME, 550MB RAM, 1.9GHZ Processor, 40GB HARD DRIVE, 80% free space.

Cheers,

While it is possible, I wouldn't do it.... There's nothing like a clean install! I would definately recommend doing it going from 9x to 2k - it's such a big leap - lotsa core architecture changes.

It's quite simple to back up most data. I just did it about 2 weeks ago - here's my little list of stuff to backup:

Email
Contacts
Fav's
Fonts
Little apps that don't use the registry and don't throw files in system32
Email signatures
Winamp & Trillian skins and plugins (almost forgot those!)

I agree... clean install is the only way to do it really.... plus it means your PC will run faster cos it wont have all the cr*p on it from the past few months!!

dont forget to back up your document folder also (unless its on a different drive or sommit!)

Yeah, I would recommend the same... Especially coming from Windows ME (by far Microsoft's worst attempt at an operating system).

Almost forgot the FAT issue too... the NT (2K & XP) architecture likes to run on NTFS, whereas Win9x used FAT32
